In- Person Administrator in Training (AIT)

NCSLA is proud to be a provider of the Administrator Certification Program, approved by the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation. The 120-hour program includes 16 hours of classroom instruction, 4–6 hours of independent study, and a minimum of 100 hours working with an approved AIT preceptor at a licensed facility. The NCSLA program is designed to give the serious candidate comprehensive knowledge of the assisted living industry and a practical understanding of what it takes to be a successful administrator. An added quality of our program is a review of Medicaid operational procedures and systems to assist new administrators working in communities that serve residents approved for Medicaid benefits.

What truly sets our program apart is our team of instructors.
Each instructor brings years of real-world operational experience in assisted living and family care homes—they are active owners and operators who understand the daily responsibilities and challenges of running high-quality care environments. Their hands-on expertise ensures that every lesson is grounded in practical application, giving candidates the insight and confidence needed to excel as future administrators.

Overview of the Online Administrator in Training Program

Prepare for a rewarding career as an Adult Care Home Administrator with the Online Administrator in Training (AIT) Program offered through UNCG and NCSLA. This program provides the same state-approved curriculum as traditional in-person training, but with the added convenience and flexibility of online learning. Designed by NCSLA subject matter experts and instructional designers at UNCG Online, this program allows you to learn at your own pace while meeting the requirements for certification. By completing this program, along with an approved preceptorship and all other Adult Care Home licensure requirements, you’ll be ready to take the next step toward certification as an Adult Care Home Administrator.

While not required, it is recommended that prospective students have Adult Care Home, Family Care Home, or other related experience before enrolling in the online AIT course. Individuals without prior experience are encouraged to consider the in-person class offered by NCSLA in Raleigh, NC, which may provide additional support and foundational understanding.

Preceptorship Requirements for AIT Certification

To complete the AIT certification process, students are required to participate in a 100-hour preceptorship. This in-person training must be conducted at a North Carolina-licensed Adult Care Home or Family Care Home under the supervision of an approved Adult Care Home or Family Care Home Administrator.

During the preceptorship, the student and their approved preceptor will have three scheduled conference calls with the NCSLA Education Director—an initial call, a midpoint call, and a final call—to ensure progress and provide support.

In addition to the preceptorship, all other certification requirements must be met, including:

  • Submitting a completed background check.

  • Completing the application process.

  • Providing a college transcript.

  • Passing the state exam.

These steps ensure students are fully prepared for their role as an Adult Care Home Administrator.

Online Learning Format and Tools for AIT Students

The AIT program is designed to be flexible and accessible, utilizing an engaging online learning format to support students in completing their classroom requirements for certification. Students will use a variety of tools and resources, including:

  • Online forums for collaboration and discussion.

  • Assigned readings to build foundational knowledge.

  • Quizzes to assess understanding.

  • Videos for interactive and visual learning.

The self-paced structure of the program allows students to learn at their own speed and on their own schedule, making it easier to balance training with personal and professional responsibilities. This comprehensive online approach ensures students are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their future roles.
